Founded on 28 December 1885 by A O Hume at Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College in Mumbai, with 72 delegates in attendance.
'Theory of Safety Valve' was related to the formation of INC.
First president : W C Bannerjee
General Secretary : A O Hume
9 resolutions were passed in the first session. The first resolution was presented by G Subrahmanya Ayyar
The name INC was given by Dadabhai Naoroji
Lord Dufferin was the british viceroy at the time of formation of INC
The only malayalie participated in the first session of INC was Barrister G P Pillai



The second session of INC was held at Kolkata in 1886 and the president was Dadabhai Naoroji. He was elected 3 times as president of INC.

The third session of INC was held at Madras in 1887 and the president was Badruddin Tyabji , who was the first Muslim president 


The Fourth session of INC was held at Allahabad in 1888 and the president was George Yule , was the first Non-Indian president


The Twelfth session of INC was held at Kolkata in 1896 . Vande Mataram first sung in a political context by Rabindranath Tagore . It is a poem by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee


The Thirteenth session of INC was held at Amravati (Maharashtra) in 1897 and the president was C Sankaran Nair , who was the only malayalee president 


1909 Lahore session president - Madan Mohan Malaviya

The 27th session of INC was held at Kolkata in 1911 . Our National Anthem Jana Gana Mana was first sung in this session 


Annie Besant became the first woman president in 1917 at Kolkata 


1920 annual session Nagpur

Moulana Mohammedali became the president in 1923  at Kakinada

Mahatma Gandhi became the president in 1924 at Belgium


Sarojini Naidu became the first Indian woman president in 1925 at kanpur

The Congress split into Moderates and Extremists in 1907 at Surat ( partition of Bengal) 


The main extremist leaders were Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal. They were called Lal Bal Pal.


The reunion between the Moderates and Extremists took place in the Lucknow Session 1916. Hindu-Muslim unity.


Pattabhi Sitaramayya known as official historian of Indian National Congress.
