Constituent Assembly


  • The Constitution of India is the supreme law of India

  • An idea for a Constituent Assembly of India was proposed by M. N. Roy
  • Indian National Congress in 1935 demanded for a Constituent Assembly
  • The British Government  accepted the demand for a Constituent Assembly in Linlithgow August offer of 1940

  • Founded on 6 December 1946 , implemented under Cabinet Mission Plan
  • Initially there were 389 members. After partition of India there were 299 members , including 15 women members.
  • The Constituent Assembly met for the first time in 9th December 1946 (before partition of India). Dr Sachchidananda Sinha was the first chairman (temporary) of Constituent Assembly.
  • 11 December 1946  Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected as the president. B. N. Rau was appointed constitutional adviser to the assembly; Rau prepared the initial draft of the constitution

  • 13 December 1946 an 'Objective Resolution' was moved by Jawaharlal Nehru. It finally became the Preamble of the constitution
  • The 'Objective Resolution' was passed by the Constituent Assembly on 22th January 1947
