Jallianwala Bagh Massacre

Also known as Amritsar Massacre

Took place on 13 April 1919 at Amritsar in Punjab

The protest against Rowlatt Act leads to the Massacre

Rowlatt Act 1919 - Government had the power to arrest any person with out any reason

On this day the Baishakhi pilgrims who came to participate in the annual Baisakhi celebrations as well as a crowd of nonviolent protesters gathered in Jallianwala Bagh to protest against the arrest of leaders Satya Pal and Dr Saifuddin Kitchlew.

On General Dyer's order, his troops fired on the crowd for ten minutes .

379 dead and about 1,200 wounded

Observation made by Mahatma Gandhi : “Plassey laid the foundation of the British Empire, Amritsar has shaken it.”

C Sankaran Nair (INC) resigned from Executive Council of the Governor-General of India.

Hunter commission was appointed to enquire about the tragedy.

Later Dyer was killed by Udham Singh (Ram Mohammad Singh Azad)
