Preamble


  • The preamble is based on the Objectives which was drafted and moved in the Constituent Assembly by Jawaharlal Nehru on 13 December 1946 . Adopted by the constitution on 26th November 1949.
  • The preamble is the most precious part of the constitution.
  • It is the heart and soul of  constitution.
  • The idea of preamble is taken from US constitution.
  • The term 'WE' in the preamble means Indian people
  • Originally preamble described the state as a "sovereign democratic republic"
  • The word "Secular" and "Socialist” were later added by the 42nd Amendment
  • Thus preamble declares India as "sovereign socialist secular democratic republic
  • The preamble has been amended only once
  • According to the  Preamble the four objectives of the constitution  are Equality, Justice, Fraternity and Liberty.
  • Ideals of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity borrowed from France
  • N.A. Palkhivala describes preamble as the 'Identity Card of the Constitution'
  • K M Munshi called preamble as the ‘Political Horoscope of Indian Constitution’
  • Ernest Barker said that ‘the preamble is the keynote to the constitution’
